Choose an organisation as a case study with which you are familiar or can obtain information on leadership practice. Select and justify your choice of one leadership model that you feel is relevant for leadership within your sector (e.g. Construction, Food and Drink) where application to safety and managing change are priorities. Each model describes leadership styles differently. Compare theory of the leadership styles within the model with practice for site safety. In addition, explain (justifying your arguments with appropriate evidence) where leadership theory works in practice when safety is a priority issue and where theory does not appear to work in real situations requiring leaders to drive change using different styles to succeed. Using a range of suitable, authoritative sources and your personal experience for the case study the following questions are offered as a suggested starting point for your critical thinking for the report: • Which leadership models align with the priorities of application to safety and to changing organisational attitudes/culture; which one is the better and why?
• What ethical issues are involved in applying different leadership styles to health and safety problems?
• Based on the best aligned leadership model what are the leadership styles and in which situations are each of the styles best applied for success? How can the adoption of the different styles lead to organisational change where required in attitude/behaviour?
Formal report format, approximately 3,500 words, fully referenced using Harvard.
Present your findings in the form of a well-written and professional report with titled diagrams as appropriate to present statistical data and theoretical models, cover page with appropriate report title and author details, contents page with document page numbered, executive summary, aims, conclusions, references page and any appendices. Please note that you should reference using the Harvard system – you need to provide appropriately detailed and correctly cited evidence of your additional reading in supporting your submission that links the text to the references. It is suggested that whilst the internet may provide some evidence to support arguments that assessment reports will also make use of published academic papers, books and government reports.
