Film analysis essay (20 points). Written on Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone (the first film), the analysis should run no more than 3000 words (about 6 double-spaced pages using a 12 point typeface). Graded as follows:
Use of class material and concepts (3 points) – you are expected to make use of the vocabulary and ideas we studied in class. Your analytical essay should clearly reflect your completion of the readings and your participation in the class discussions. Vocaub words to use: obviously talk about the characters, story and plot and the obvious, but here are some things we have talked about in class. Pre-productiom, Production, Post-Production. The genre, Conflict(internal/external), Plot. They types of shots in the film: close up, establishing, medium, low/high angle, POV. Camera movements. CGI, special effects. Mise-en-scène, Adaptation, Blockbuster. Characters, props, costumes, sound, Interpretation, argumentation and evidence (5 points)
Present original and insightful comments on the film, placing it in social context and comparing it (where relevant) to other films. (2)
Use material from the film and from academic sources and commentaries to support your arguments. (2)
Present a clear thesis statement. (1)
Writing (2 points) – your review should be clearly written with particular attention to expressing your ideas and supporting your arguments. Grammatical and spelling errors will cost you, but poor elucidation and expression will cost you more.
